The pupil is the hole located in the center of the iris of the eye that allows light through into the eye so it can strike the retina. It appears to be black because light rays entering the pupil are either absorbed by the tissues inside the eye directly, or absorbed after diffuse reflections within the eye that mostly miss exiting the narrow pupil.

So essentially it looks black to us because the light doesn’t come back out of the eye and we would need the light to see a colour.

Pupils are the small openings for light to enter eyes. The light which passes trough pupils are completely absorbed.. In the visible spectrum, white reflects light and is a presence of all colours, but black absorbs light and is an absence of colour. Since it absorbs all colours it appears to be black.
