      I think people have known about cancer for thousands of years, because it’s not like other diseases – it’s really unique. But it was in the 1980s that they first discovered that cancer was caused by mutations in your cells.

      Most diseases are rare – which just means that not many people get it. But some diseases are REALLY rare. Out of thousands or even millions of people, only 1 might get a proper Rare Disease. Really rare diseases are special to scientists, because it makes it easier to figure out what causes the disease.

      But because they are so rare, most of them don’t even get names!
